We left Deming, New Mexico about 12:30 PM and headed to Carlsbad, New Mexico.
The weather is "just plain HOT". 105 today. I appreciate my air conditioned truck and fifth-wheel trailer. I'll be the first to admit I'd be a real wimp of a pioneer.
"No Whining".
Interstate 10 takes us through the Southern part of New Mexico. If you appreciate the desert you'll enjoy the drive. Mostly flat, straight stretches of road with an occasional climb over or descent down one of the mountain ranges that surround the area.
Before we knew it we were in El Paso, Texas. Here we turned North on Loop 375. I neglected to hook up my GPS (we don't need no stinkin' GPS) so I don't know what the maximum accent turned out to be. Let me just say it was a long pull up the Franklin Mountains with a 14k pound sled on the back of the Jimmy!
Beautiful rugged country and hardly any traffic. For you guys that live in the East, you don't know what your missing until you can drive 145 miles without a gas station in site!
We arrived at the Carlsbad RV Park about 4:30 PM with the gas gauge on empty! Thank goodness for our new 56 gallon tank.
Carlsbad is most known for the Carlsbad Caverns. This is one of the largest Caverns in the world and a chance I've been waiting for since I was a young boy. There are numerous tours through the cavern with the degree of difficulty from moderate to strenuous. Of course the one I'd love to go on is rated as wild caving with caving gear provided. It requires climbing and crawling with tight squeezes and drop offs. My "tight squeeze" days are long over. The only tight squeeze I could handle now is from my wife and kids! We'll do the moderate walking tour. Oh, by the way, the temperature in the cave is about 56 degrees. I might need a sweater.
So off to bed for a good nights sleep in our air conditioned home away from home.
